Although it is true that schools are fundamentally institutions that impart education – a term broadly used to mean academics – we strongly believe that schools should be a lot more than a medium to impart academic education. A teacher’s role extends way beyond simply explaining what’s written in the student’s books, and at AVP, we expect our teachers to go above and beyond. A child can learn about a subject by simply reading books. A teacher exists not only to help him understand it, but also to be his life coach, friend and guide.
We strongly prefer that our teachers have previous experience in working with students, and a certification for the same. This is because there is a difference between a teacher, and a person who can teach a subject. It is not enough simply to be good at teaching a subject. It is highly important that you be good at teaching to students, as the human factor makes a big difference. In order to be a good teacher, you must understand the students’ mindset, and know how to work with it. For instance, you need to be able to arouse students’ interest in the subject, which requires both experience in working with children, and knowledge of your subject and how to make it interesting.
A child’s life at home is a key factor affecting his/her performance at school, and later on in life. Therefore, it is important that the child’s parents are attuned to his/her needs, strengths and weaknesses. To this end, we work with the parents, updating them on their child’s progress and discussing what needs to be done at home for the child’s betterment. Therefore, a teacher at AVP must have good people skills, and be able to proactively discuss matters with students’ parents. Parent teacher meetings are an important event and offer a great opportunity to do the same.
